In honour of National Donut Day, today we curate a list of some of our favourite places around Edmonton to get your sugary fix. We are not sure who comes up with these type of “holidays”, but we are glad for this one. While places such as Tim Horton’s and nearby supermarkets offer the tried and true fried doughy staples, Edmonton is a bustling foodie city. As such, it comes to no surprise for locals alike to make an effort to visit some specialty stores.

Doughnut Party – 10938 119 Street

Boasting a menu of 6 different donuts baked fresh every day, Doughnut Party is one of the OG specialty shops in Edmonton with both classic flavours and creative, bold combinations. Follow their Instagram to stay up to date on what’s on the menu for the day.

Moonshine Donuts – Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market

With each batch made fresh and with tender care, Moonshine Donuts normally sells their product at the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market each Saturday morning. Their creative chefs are inspired by unique flavours with an inspiring presentation that is truly Insta-worthy.

Destination Donuts – 10548 124 Street

If donuts were an art, Destination Donuts would be the Picasso. Handmade fresh daily, their variety of donuts are sure to satisfy any craving. Their Instagram showcases their works of art. See it for yourself.

Although there are still numerous places around the city, these places have provided us with satisfying, memorable moments of donut joy. Edmonton has the blessed problem of too many donut places to choose from. If you are visiting the Ramada Edmonton Yellowhead, be sure to ask our staff for their favourite picks.

Happy National Donut Day!

Hotel Hacks

Travel quite a lot? Or just once in a while? Sometimes there are some unspoken ways to make the best out of your hotel stay. In gathering some tips from some travelling pros, here are a few hacks to keep note of during your next visit anywhere.

  1. Missing Your Charger?
    • With so many of us carrying multiple electronic devices these days, it is easy to get mixed up and forget an important charging device. Rather than shop for a new one, try asking the front desk if they happen to have a spare phone cord or charger available. Chances are another unfortunate person may have left one in their room and the cable just happened to have ended up in the lost and found.
      • Pro tip: use the USB port on the back of the TV if you are missing an adapter.
      • Extra pro tip: if you have a laptop with some of your favorite shows, sometimes an HDMI cable may be available to watch everything on the big screen in your room
  2. Get to Know the Staff
    • When in a new area, the people in the hotel are usually some of the most informative when it comes to local restaurants, sights, and events. Getting to know them during your stay can allow them to give you pretty good insight on what to do and where to go based on their local experiences.
      • Pro tip: Book directly off the hotel. By using the hotel’s own website for bookings or even by calling the hotel directly, you may receive “off the books” discounts or upgrades. The off-season is usually when the best deals are available.
  3. Avoid Mirror Fog and See Clearly
    • This one probably happens to us at home too, but it can be quite annoying to use a fogged-up mirror right after a shower. An easy preventative measure would be to rub a portion of bar soap on the mirror before showering and voila! No more need to wait for the mirror to de-mist.
      • Pro-tip: A very steamy shower can also help with some of those stubborn wrinkles in your clothes. While showering, hang up a wrinkled shirt or dress and cut down on your ironing time.
  4. Resourceful Extras
    • An ironing board can easily be used as an extra table. The coffee maker can dispense hot water for your instant noodles. Your coffee mug can be used as a sound amplifier for your phone when playing some of your favorite tunes. Shower caps can be used to cover your dirty shoes when packing them in your luggage.
      • Pro-tip: Even if travelling solo, ask for two key cards. You just never know if you misplace one or require it to keep the power on in the room.
  5. Mention Special Occasions
    • The hospitality world is all about making the best of your stay. Mentioning a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary while asking for a nice room to stay in can sometimes land you a room upgrade or a surprise in your room. Just make sure you give them long enough advanced notice.

There are many creative workarounds and tricks in the travelling world. For many of these tricks, many of them come down to simply asking for something. We are always willing to go the extra mile for you at the Ramada Edmonton Yellowhead.

Happy travels to all!

How To Prepare For A Stress-Free Family Road-Trip

Road trips can be fun at any age and almost always offer up a great adventure worth remembering for years to come. If you are planning a road trip with your children, there are some essential tips that you will want to keep in mind to ensure you have a journey to remember, for all the right reasons.

The first rule for any trip is to pack well, especially if you are travelling with toddlers. Packing more essentials than you think you may need is a good rule of thumb. This would mean to pack extra diapers, clothing, snacks, water and wipes.

Keeping these items organized and in a place where it is easily accessible can make a significant difference for your trip. Packing well also includes having the right devices for entertainment devices fully charged and ready to go. Determining travel times with the available choices for entertainment pre-loaded can keep the kids engaged and focused during those long rides.

Mapping out where you are, and the travel distance between breaks will be important. You may have sudden stops for bathroom breaks; however, the bulk of your travel times should be planned. It can also be beneficial to prepare in advance as it allows the family to see any unique sites or experiences something that may not be at your final destinations and does not take much time away from your route.

For safety reasons, it is also better to check weather conditions in advance, travel during the daylight, and be aware of your fuel needs between your stops. Keeping track of time does not necessarily mean that you should never derail from your scheduled route, it just means to be aware of time and allow some time for unexpected circumstances.

Keeping sugar free snacks on hand and travelling earlier in the morning will also help ease the long periods spent on the road.

In addition to your planning, check the perks of the hotel you are booking your stay at. Essential amenities such as free high-speed internet and free parking will also ensure there are no hidden costs and have provided more flexibility during your stay.
